At the moment I am part way through reading Anne of Green Gables by L.M Montgomery. Throughout reading this I am making key notes on the characters and their particular behaviour and some notes on the themes that run throughout the text. There are a variety of themes in the book which include:
· Conflict between imagination and social expectations
· Sentimentality verses emotion
· Forgiveness
· Vanity
· Rebelliousness and expectations of behaviour
· Imagination
· Romanticism
· Fashion Concerns
There are also aspects of imagery in the form of:
· Image of nature
· Anne’s red hair
· Light from Diana’s window
I am not totally sure which are key themes that would be worth writing about and comparing. Similarly, I am undecided on which book to compare with. I thought about The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole by Sue Townsend as it also shows a teenager/child and a more modern approach to imagination. However I don’t know if it would be appropriate and whether there would be enough similarities. I am keen to compare Anne of Green Gables to a book which features themes of imagination and rebelliousness and maybe is more modern, but I’m not totally sure which one. :/ :):)
